It’s testament to the incredible fortitude and heroism of WWII that nary a month goes by without some tale of hitherto unknown valour reaching our screens, and Robert Guédiguian’s drama continues the trend with an angry take on events in the French Resistance.

The hand held camerawork and often theatrical mise-en-scene adding a hyperreal sensibility as we follow the married Kichizo and his maid/lover Sada on their doomed affair in 1930’s Japan.

In fact this is a slow burning and underplayed version of real life events, as Norwegian resistance member Max takes on dastardly invading Nazis, in a WWII film that’s a wobbly mix of two-fisted action and true-life consequence.

What we got was something quite different, but none the worse for it.
