Toy Story 3

It’s actually tempting to open this review by berating modern Hollywood for their lack of creative nous. While other studios turn out teeth-grindingly inept explosofests like Transformers, Pixar quietly carry out superlative work on films like Toy Story 3, probably the most effective and genuinely touching meditation on the nature of relationships and yep -even that old chestnut mortality – than we’ve seen in many a year, throwing a pretty harsh light on any number of ‘grown-up’ movies out there for their continued lack in both the emotional heft and storytelling departments.

Oh -and it’s sweet and funny too…

A Nightmare On Elm Street

Politics, elections, proportional representation, yadda yadda yadda…

Let’s lighten things up shall we? Let’s talk about a child sex killer who gets burnt to death, and then haunts his former prey, slashing them to bits in their dreams, shall we?

That’s right, Freddy Kruger’s back. Again. The remake/re-boot/’re-imagining’ of A Nightmare On Elm Street is here and there’s not a damned thing you can do about it. Apart from watch it (or ignore it).

Before we start, let’s just imagine that Frederick Krudger were real. Wouldn’t he just be the Daily Mail’s ultimate wet dream? Not only is our man a paedophile, he is also quite possiblly an immigrant paedophile (check out his surname…). The worst kind, eh Daily Mail?!

Slashing The Seats was granted access to the exclusive premiere of the film last night in London’s glitzy West End, walking down the red carpet and mixing with such stars and luminaries as Sir Anthony Hopkins, George Clooney and Dame Helen Mirren.

Iron Man 2

What better place than the vast temple of Mammon men refer to as London’s Westfield shopping centre to settle in and check out a movie about a billionaire show-off. Make no mistake, Iron Man 2 is all about the bling.

Unfortunately, it isn’t really about anything else.

Where the first movie gave us a former hellraiser as a cocky, likeable..er..hellraiser, here we get to see all the bits we hate about rich guys like that. All the dazzle, all the showing off -in short, all the style over substance…

Paranormal Activity

Paranormal Activity lived up to the hype. Shot for pennies by first time director Oren Peli and using a cast of three total unknows, it’s completely outdone bloated Hollywood horror franchises by being actually quite scary.

Micah and Katie are a completely normal (even normal looking, a novelty in movies these days) couple living in a nice house in San Diago. The thing is Katie is being haunted by a ‘demon’ – basically a nasty spirit that likes to torment people for fun. Deciding to document the weird happenings, Micah buys a camera and documents the whole spookshow.

Star Wars!

A trilogy that stands as the defining cinematic experience for an entire generation. It pushed technical standards, birthing the entire SFX industry, and merged legendary story cycles with space-age fantast to stunning effect. Certainly a DVD/Blu-Ray box set worth investing in right? Well, if you’re still unsure, why not check out the amazing reviews available on amazon:

..I AM A BIG FAN OF MOVIES..WORKING IN A VIDEOSHOP / AND WORKED IN A CINEMA FOR YEARS.. I WATCHED ALL THE CLAASIC FILMS..WHAT I DONT UNDERSTAND IS WHY STAR WARS IS SUPPOSE TO BE THE BEST FILM.. ITS BORING / WHACKY STORYLINE / ANNOYING CHARACTERS.. DARTH VADER HAS SOME KIND OF MAGIC POWERS..(NECK TWIST BY FORCE?? OR SOMETHING) THATS ALL HE HAS TO DO TO KILL THEM ALL.BUT HE HAS SWORD FIGHTS INSTEAD..??? THERES A SCENE WHERE LOADS OF WHITE ROBOTS SHOOT AT HARRISON FORD. ITS WORSER THEN A BOLLYWOOD FILM..NOT A SINGLE LASER BULLET HITS HARRISON??

STS isn’t going to argue with this, because he’s a professional-he’s worked in a video shop. To be fair, we didn’t think you still got video shops – but it’s certainly changed our fuddy-duddy ideas about actually watching a movie before we talk about it!
