An uncompromising mystery thriller with some truly memorable – and disgusting – on-screen executions.

With it’s highly stylised aesthetic, Noir has always been ripe for pastiche and parody, so it’s no real surprise that Almodovar’s latest quickly veers into the meta – film references abound, as do some very considered performances, vying with a split-timeline narrative for attention, as the director makes a purposeful effort to distance himself from the maternal leanings that filled his previous effort Volver.
