It’s fair to say that the studio took a gamble appointing Guy Ritchie to head up this sumptuous return to Holmsian London -the director’s previous, Rocknrolla took a piffling $6M in the US – but you can certainly see where the idea came from –who better to guide us on a romp through the gas lit streets than Guy bonafide mockney bowbells me old son Ritchie dotchaknow missus. It’s woolly thinking, and it reaps its own rewards, turning Conan-Doyle’s most famous creation into a semi action hero with downplayed detective skills and an appalling case of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen syndrome.

Slashing The Seats are about as excited as it’s possible to get about watching a large man with a hammer shout cod-Shakespearean dialogue at the Mayor of Noo Yawk, but even we raised an eyebrow as new casting rumours hit the interwebs. It seems that the latest shouty ac-tor to catch Thor director Kenneth Brannagh’s eye may in fact be…Bob De Niro!
Yes really! Brannagh does have some history with the ex-Lamotta, following his blundering about in the dreadful Frankenstein, so it is sort-of feasible, but frankly Loki is the only role we think would suit the increasingly demented half-man half-prune.
In addition to this, there are rumblings from AICN that Jude Law may be donning cape and archaic weaponry as well, as he’s certainly the sort of man mountain we can see battling a frost giant…

0 CommentsTerry Gilliam’s unique body of work is perhaps best viewed as the last bastion of pure imagination in a studio system increasingly ruled by bean-counters. Though not always successful, his films are always interesting, and even his failures – The Man Who Killed Don Quixote being a paramount example- contain more than enough to maintain that interest. Coupled with the untimely loss of leading man Heath Ledger, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus arrives groaning with a weight of expectation it struggles to meet.
