We don’t normaly do straight to DVD fare here at STS (unless it’s a really gnarly gore-fest of course), but until Ryan Reynolds decides to show us his ring there’s a distinct lack of superpowered action on screens at the moment, and DC’s animation department is currently firing them out like a lone baby rocketing away from an exploding planet, so we figured we’d take a look.

Writer Mark Millar may be following fellow comic book illuminati Warren Ellis down the path toward self-referential hell, but if you’re unfamiliar with his unique take on four-colour heroics, or indeed have only encountered him through the medium of the ultra-watered-down ‘Wanted’ before (An Evil Loom! What the hell were they thinking…) then you’re in for a fantastic ride….
Since Iron Man, Spider-Man and The Dark Knight reminded them how succesful comic book movies could be, and with Thor girding his hammer for battle, rubbish-but-marketable X-Man gambit getting a spin-off and Green Lantern about to throw his ring into the…erm…ring.. Hollywood is nutso for capes right now.
Unfortunately they don’t usually get it right, leaving us clutching our popcorn in horror as Catwoman craps all over our fanboy dreams. Luckily, STS is on the case, so here’s a list of characters ripe for the big screen treatment, and a few studios shouldn’t touch with a Kryptonite bargepole!
According to Variety, Ryan Reynolds has beaten off stiff competition from the likes of Bradley Cooper and… erm… Justin Timberlake to take the title role in the latest DC Comics franchise, Green Lantern.
Disappointing news for Bat-Fans.
Unconfirmed news reports, but from a notoriously reliable source suggest that Christopher Nolan, the man who changed Batman from an embarrassment to the comic-book-to-movie sub-genre to a truly kick-ass franchise may not return for the third installment.
According to the source, the death of Heath Ledger hit Nolan hard, not only on a personal level, but professional too, as the third Bat-Flick was to have a strong focus on The Joker. The insider knowledge goes on to state that the first we an expect to see the third movie will be in 2012.
The only good point about this may be that the window can give studios a chance to develop other DC Comics properties.
