Newsgush: Scott Pilgrim Officially ‘Best First Picture Ever’..

Here at STS we spend way too much time reading comic books, so when a creator-owned property like Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World makes it’s way through the Holly-mangler we’re always concerned.

Luckily if this fantastic first look (courtesy of our friends over at the ever-lovin’ UltraCulture) is anything to go by, we needn’t have worried – This looks incredible!

SPVTW _ as it shall henceforth be known – details Michael Cera’s attempts to defeat his true love’s seven evil ex-boyfriends. With a flaming sword naturally.

If this is anything to go by then Edgar Wright is making a great job of some truly bizarre casting as Cera doles out some truly hardcore ass-kickery – expect a release date to be anounced soon.

What better way to avoid the UK Snow than a a trip to the local googleplex you might think. Unfortunately something hits you pretty quickly as you glance through the now playing listings –yep, pretty much every film out this January is designed to send a shiver – either of horror or of boredom – down your spine, and Vampire Actioner Daybreakers is a trite case in point.

In terms of what you’d want to see at your local cinema, most of the movies coming in 2010 rank just below “dropping your Oscar Meyer hot Dog on the floor”.

Wipe the popcorn from your beard and join us then, as we realise we’ve got piss-all to look forward to this summer, in part three of our amazingly awful 2010 movie round-up!!

NewsGush: Dutch Dig Up The Thing

Of all the AIDS-allegory classic horrors you’d been hoping no one would mess with, John Carpenter’s ‘82 solid cold classic The Thing has to be waaaay up the list. No surprise then, that Matthijs van Heijningen Jr has been chosen to fuck about with it next year. With an illustrious back catalogue including…wait for it…one upcoming movie (Army of the Dead, Z-grade Zombie flick fans), the frankly unprononcable Heijningen will be developing ‘a new vision’ from a screenplay by Battlestar Galactica scribe Ronald D.Moore.

Details are suitably sketchy right now, but we’re placing bets on the Norwegian base featuring heavily, and crossing our fingers for some Ibsen/Bergman-esque glacial dialogue, heavy on the blacks and subtitles, rather than the type of blue-filter slash-em-up we’ve come to expect from horror reboots. We won’t get it of course -that geezer what wrote the new Nightmare on Elm Street being heavily involved.

What do you reckon -can a wild-eyed Dutchman armed with heavy CGI pull this off, or is The Thing one giant space vegetable that’s better left in an icy grave?

After spending New Years Day cleaning what, for argument’s sake, we’ll assume was mud mixed with chewing gum off the office floor, we finally had time to carry on checking out all the new movies crawling out of the toilet to infect your eyeballs like refugees from an early Cronenberg movie in the new year. Yep, it’s part two of our craptabulous round up of the biggest, worstest flicks of 2010!
