R.I.P: Edward Woodward

173

Film, Television and Stage actor Edward Woodward has passed away aged 79.

Born in Croydon in 1930, Woodward first gained widespread recognition as a world weary assassin in TV drama ‘Callan’, indeed, TV had been the actor’s bread and butter for many years – in many people’s minds he will always be The Equalizer – however his on/off film career began when he recreated his stage part in 1955’s ‘Where There’s a Will’ and boasts many small but impeccably played roles, most recently in Hot Fuzz.

In addition to his screen appearences, Woodward was a talented recording artist who released several well received albums, although he will be best known to STS readers as Sergeant Howie in seminal 1973 horror The Wicker Man.

Most recenty appearing in the BBC’s long running soap Eastenders, Woodward had been suffering from ill health while filming in Truro, Cornwall for upcoming drama A Congregation of Ghosts and passed away following complications bought on by Pneumonia.
