World’s Sexiest Woman ™ Megan Fox; topless, in a horror comedy from an award-winning writer who used to strip for a living. It’s fairly obvious why Fox’s Atomic imprint are hanging high box office hopes on this but unfortunately it looks like it’s a triumph of marketing over substance.

Frozen River

The desperate woman in trouble premise hints at chick-flick fluff, but nothing could be further from the truth as we follow an illegal operation in which the duo are seen ferrying immigrants across the St.Lawrence River on the New York State border. The pitch-perfect writing from newcomer Courtney Hunt has already won over the Sundance crowd, and even secured a couple of Oscar nods. It’s not hard to see why.
Max Manus: Man Of War

In fact this is a slow burning and underplayed version of real life events, as Norwegian resistance member Max takes on dastardly invading Nazis, in a WWII film that’s a wobbly mix of two-fisted action and true-life consequence.

But he should be creeping into the public – or at least, the Sci-Fi geek’s – consciousness fairly shortly, with the release of his debut feature District 9.

7 CommentsBret Easton Ellis has a habit of taking us on tours of glossy 80s locales, but where his books offer a set of stylish short tales with an engrossing narrative – not to mention the odd vampire – here we get the arse-end of the 80s dream. A bloated, drug-addled corpse of a movie that comes off like Robert Altman directing MTVs The Hills.
