Despite rumours that this is his final acting gig, Clint manages to stay nicely understated in Gran Torino and it’s to his credit that despite Academy disdain, Gran Torino has gone on to become his most succesful film. Just as Unforgiven put The Man With No Name neatly to bed, this plays out like a resolution to the Dirty Harry films – and a far better one than The Dead Pool at that.

In a year where Transformers 2 has somehow had one of the highest grossing opening weekends ever, the signs are clear that we are headed for an apocalyptic film meltdown, finally culminating in an Idiocracy-style future where plot and dialogue are sacrificed entirely in favour of fart jokes and explosions.
Obviously, here at STS we can’t wait! Can you honestly say that anything by Kurosawa wouldn’t become immeasurably better if a few bazookas were added? Would it really have hurt Orson Wells to include a few raspberry noises in Citizen Kane?
The Proposal

Atlas Entertainment main man Charles Roven has stepped up to produce Warner’s long-gestating, giant-robot-actioner, Voltron. The Dark Knight producer, along with Richard Suckle and Steve Alexander (of slightly less illustrious Get Smart and The International pedigree), hope to drag the mechanical hero out of development hell. With early reviews for Justin Marks’ script impressively positive, it looks like a 2012 release date may now be in sight.
NewsGush: Sony Win Jacko Movie Rights

Sony pictures have apparently picked up the rights to the Michael Jackson tribute movie, forking out a hefty $50 Million for what basically amounts to unused rehearsal tapes. Sony bought the footage from AEG, who are desperately trying to fill the empty coffers left by the King of Pop’s untimely demise and the company has also put up footage from the tribute concert featuring sister Janet and Justin Timberlake, among many others.
With the public outpourings of grief still riding high in the news, it may seem crass to mention that the feature, originally intended as a behind the scenes DVD extra, may now be remastered in 3D, whilst footage from many of Jackson’s older videos will be added to the mix.
Director Kenny Ortega confidently predicts an early 2010 release, before heading off to film Footloose.
