Today is a good day for film fans.
It has been reported that the proposed remake of Katsuhiro Otomo’s seminal 1988 anime Akira hs been put on indefinite hold. According to rumor Akira would be moved to the US and star Leonardo DiCaprio, which in this bloggers humble opinion would have been akin to pissing on an entire form of film making.
And further to that, late breaking news suggest that Darren Aronofsky’s Robocop remake has been shoved back into development hell as he is off to direct Black Swan – a supernatural ballerina story, starring Natalie Portman. While Aronofsky is a talented director – I see no point in remaking a movie only 22 years old, which still looks excellent today.
More original films in production than unnecessary remakes can only be a good thing.

Darren Aronofsky’s an overrated Director, I reckon. Requiem for a Dream was a cinematic low point for all concerned… and an insult to Hubert Selby Jr, whether he knew it or not.
I agree – why remake Robocop?
Indeed, why not just re-release the original in theatres-I for one would love to see that dude’s face melt off at the iMax!
Wasn’t there a load of fuss about The Matrix nicking ideas from Ghost in the Shell?
Oh, and I reckon the cyberpunk feel of the bloke’s apartment in Pi lent from it a little as well.
Remakes – we got ‘em

Also, I don’t think Robocop’s as good as we all fondly remember. I bought an 80s VHS of it in a charity shop (the only way to view such a film) and it was, well, distinctly just alright. The sequels downright unwatchable.
Ghost in the Shell, on the other hand, is a brilliant animation. And a lot of me thinks that since it is an animation, and not live action, a remake would be more of a reinterpretation. See Ichi and his weird love for sadism.
Dave – Robocop is a cinematic masterpiece and will I probably decend into flaming anyone who says otherwise. Sorry. It has everything a film needs to make it watchable, and rewatchable. Also, a guy melts and explodes!
GITS is ace. True. And the Robocop sequels, in my mind, don’t exist.
Masterpiece?
